DROP IN

It began with a 9-hour motorcycle ride across Wisconsin and most of southern Minnesota. It was a short trek down off I-90 to the campus of Northwestern College in Orange City, IA. It was my first experience as a delegate to General Synod. I enjoyed the experience as I participated in the various activities and events. I was amazed at how much goes into the annual gathering.

General Synod offers many opportunities even if you are not a delegate. There are daily worship services, addresses by the current President and the General Secretary, general debate and committee work. There are usually special celebrations at each Synod as well. This year there are two celebrations: 30 years of women’s ordination and the 500th birthday of John Calvin. Anyone is welcome to observe any of the proceedings.*

This year the event will again be held at Hope College and Western Seminary June 4-9. It may be a neat experience to take some time and drop in on what’s happening. Want to participate in another way? There is a round-the-clock prayer support team that you can sign up for online. Enter this link in your browser http://graceofholland.org/gsprayer/ or simply click on it if you are reading this online.

Don't want to make a trip down to Holland or don't have time but are curious about what's happening? There will be much available online. Go to http://www.rca.org/ and look for news on General Synod happenings. Or visit the Synod page at http://www.rca.org/Page.aspx?pid=2059 which is a dedicated link for General Synod.

General Synod is an important gathering in the life of the denomination. I encourage you to touch base with it in some way.

*In rare occasions, the Synod must move into a closed session. All non-delegates are asked to leave for such sessions.

Keeping Healthy

I went to the doctor’s office recently for my annual physical. After the whole ordeal was over I thought about the similarities of this and of going to church. I know both are the right thing to do, and although they aren’t always anxiously anticipated activities, the long term risks of not performing these practices are dismal. If I fail to be honest and forthright with the doctor he won’t be able to help me achieve what I really want; a long and healthy existence. He is only able to help me if I communicate with him on a routine basis. He doesn’t put pressure on me if I don’t see him often because he doesn’t know if I am struggling with health issues or not. If I see him regularly and stay in the habit of routine check-ups, it is better than if I rarely go, when I would be almost ashamed to ask for an appointment. Then I would fear he might shake his head and say, “What in the world did you expect?” along with a grim prognosis for my future.

When I arrive at the doctor’s office, the nurse always checks my weight, blood pressure and temperature. These routines seem like they could be skipped, but though they may not appear critical, they do indicate some problems that may be going on that aren’t readily apparent. She asks a few questions about my health in general, what particular problems I may be experiencing. I don’t really get into the more serious subjects with the nurse because although she is a nice person and probably more knowledgeable than given credit for, she isn’t the one I want the “real” answers to come from.

The doctor I trust without reservation, his word is solemn testament to the status of his profession. I don’t even consider him being wrong, his advice is taken with great reverence. He reinforces what I suspect to be true and correct owing to both his wisdom and education. My own ideas on health, both physical and spiritual, are a mixture of hope and viewpoints I have created to make myself feel good, which isn’t necessarily without prejudice. That’s why I believe many people don’t want to attend church or even go to the doctor’s office: they could be told things that may make them uncomfortable.

We come to church at our discretion. And just like at the annual physical, we know a little poking and prodding will happen, making us uncomfortable at the time, but trusting the knowledge gained will ensure our continuing health. Let’s continue both practices.

Be careful about reading health books. You may die of a misprint.

AM Radio

I was heading home from work, enjoying some of the first warm weather of the year. Being never too early to start working on the farmer’s tan, I had the window down with my left arm hanging out. While stopped at a red light a little car pulsating with bass pulled up next to me. His tunes were so loud I couldn’t hear my own radio. After firing a disgusted look in his direction I reached over to turn up my AM talk radio show. That’s when it hit me; I’ve turned into my dad. Growing up I couldn’t stand listening to talk radio while riding in Dad’s truck, who wants to listen to old men talk about politics or financial advice anyway? Besides, AM radio was for people over 150 years old, right?

It’s true that we all turn into our parents in some ways. We might walk like them, talk like them, look like them, or tell the same corny jokes. As easy as it is to imitate our parents, trying to be like our heavenly father is extremely difficult. He really is our father, when we say the Lord’s Prayer we address him as Our Father. The Bible makes it pretty clear that we are his children. John 1 verse 12 says, “But to all who receive him, who believed in his name, he gave power to become children of God.” Being a child of God sounds pretty cool, right? But it gets even better. Galatians 4 verses 6-7, “And because you are children, God has sent the spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying, ‘Abba Father!’ So you are no longer a slave but a child, and if a child then also an heir, through God.” The new living translation says, “And since you are his child, everything he has belongs to you.”

As great as our parents may be, the blessing we get from our heavenly father far surpasses any gifts we can get from our parents or give to our children. Sounds better than that tea set or Grandma’s old out of tune piano, huh! Hey, even better than an inherited addiction to AM talk radio.

From the Thursday morning Bible Study:
Happy Father’s Day to all Dads.

What Makes a Dad
God took the strength of a mountain,
The majesty of a tree,
The warmth of a summer sun,
The calm of a quiet sea,
Father's Day The generous soul of nature,
The comforting arm of night,
The wisdom of the ages,
The power of the eagle's flight,
The joy of a morning in spring,
The faith of a mustard seed,
The patience of eternity,
The depth of a family need,
Then God combined these qualities,
When there was nothing more to add,
He knew His masterpiece was complete,
And so, He called it ... Dad        Author Unknown

Present Day Celebrations
Father's Day Festival has gained amazing popularity over the years. The festival is considered to be a secular one and is celebrated not just in the U.S. but in a large number of countries around the world including Argentina, Australia, Belgium, Brazil, France, Germany, Japan, New Zealand, Norway and India though on different dates. World over people take Father's Day as an opportunity to thank father and pay tribute to them. On this day children present Father's Day cards not just to their dads but also grandfathers, uncles, stepfathers or any other person who commands the position of a father in their life. There is also a trend to present a Father's Day gift to dad, most popular of all being a necktie. Other popular gifts being roses, the official Father's Day flower. Many people rue that the trend of presenting gifts to fathers has led to over commercialization of the festival relegating the noble idea behind Father's Day celebrations.

Fathers and Grandfathers fun...
My young granddaughter called the other day to wish me Happy Birthday. She asked me how old I was, and I told her, “Sixty-two.” She was quiet for a moment, and then she asked, “Did you start at one?”

When my son Billy and I entered our vacation cabin we kept the lights off until we were inside to keep from attracting pesky insects. Still, a few fireflies followed us in. Noticing them before I did, Billy whispered, “It's no use, Daddy. The mosquitoes are coming after us with flashlights.”

When my grandson asked me how old I was, I teasingly replied, “I'm not sure.” “Look in your underwear, Grandpa,” he advised. “Mine says I'm four to six.”
